Who we are
The Organization for Bat Conservation is a 501(c)3 non-profit, dedicated to actively inspiring people to save bat populations throughout North America and the world.
Bats have long been on the receiving-end of a lot of misplaced hate, fear, and misunderstanding. Demonized in movies and print for centuries, such characterizations have, more often than not, led to the mistreatment of bat populations around the world.
That’s where we come in.
For over 20 years, the Organization for Bat Conservation has worked tirelessly to dispel myths, educate young minds, and galvanize the next generation of bat biologists and conservationists.
The heart of our operation is based in Pontiac, Michigan, at the Bat Zone. First and foremost, we’re a wildlife sanctuary which is home to more than 250 nocturnal animals, including nine species of bats, a Two-toed sloth, skunks, three species of owls, and Southern Flying squirrels!
And that’s–really–the important part to this story. We wouldn’t be able to do what we do without their help. Our Animal Ambassadors have proven, time and again, that meaningful interactions between humans and wildlife can transcend baseless myths and fears.
Whether it’s through a Bat Zone tour right here at our headquarters, a live animal program at a school or library, or a digital program on a big screen at an auditorium, our Animal Ambassadors, along with our dedicated and skilled team of educators, remain devoted to leveling the playing field for bats everywhere.
Maybe you just love bats and want to buy some tasty mealworms for the Big Brown bats at the Bat Zone; perhaps, you love seeing kids educated and want to do your part to help our educators reach a public school somewhere in the Midwest; maybe, you just really love Tequila and know bats are the only pollinators of agave, the plant that gives us your favorite drink. Whatever your reasons are, know that your donation dollars translate to direct action on behalf of bats throughout North America and beyond.
So–what are you waiting for? We’re out everyday helping to #SavetheBats. Why not join us?
